Jenkins had harsh words for Mark Sanchez

Reaction over Greg McElroy’s statements on an Alabama radio station regarding the Jets “corrupt” locker room are pouring in, continuing the dialogue on the Jets “collapse.” (Their words, not mine).
Seriously, there has been more talk surrounding this 8-8 Jets team than there has been regarding teams in the playoffs.

In fact, so many people have been talking about it that at one point yesterday afternoon, the name Greg McElroy was a trending topic worldwide on Twitter.

Commentary from current and former (mostly former) Jets players hit the web yesterday and here’s what they had to say.

  • Kris Jekins defended McElroy’s comments on a radio appearance with Mike Lupica, saying he liked McElroy’s frankness. Jenkins had a lot more to say about the rest of the team and was especially critical of Mark Sanchez and his lack of leadership.
  • On Santonio Holmes, Jenkins added, ““You got to let him go… you don’t go and pout as a captain.” Jenkins also used the word “selfish” in reference to Holmes’ behavior.
  • One of the other interesting thing Jenkins noted in his interview was that he, Damien Woody, Shaun Ellis, and Tony Richardson would keep things in check last season, and that they provided leadership in the locker room. None of those veteran leaders were on the team this year, as you know, and I would venture to guess no one stepped up to the plate in their absence.
  • Derrick Mason stopped by ESPN radio’s The Herd and SiriusXM this morning to discuss the Jets locker room situation. You may recall Mason’s tweet from Sunday expressing his desire to open up and tell his side of the story. Mason was mostly respectful but he definitely let Sanchez have it.
  • Mason was sure to point out that he wasn’t to blame for the issues saying, “If I was the problem, then they would’ve been OK after I left. I was the scapegoat.”
  • Erik Ainge tweeted his thoughts on the McElroy interview and it raised quite a stir.

Lastly, on the Football Today podcast, former NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker made the point that perhaps McElroy just doesn’t have a good feel for what the NFL is like. He didn’t necessarily say McElroy was wrong, but rather that college and the pros are two different things. Welcome to the NFL?

You can share your opinion on McElroy speaking out on the Jetstwit poll here.

In Other News

The team has fined Bart Scott $10,000 dollars for flipping the bird to photographers on Monday. The team stated that “Bart’s actions were inappropriate & unacceptable.”

Tthe NFL has announced that they will not discipline Scott, according to Manish Mehta of the Daily News. According to the source, the incident will be handled as a “club matter.”

It’s a good move for the Jets to go ahead and discipline Scott and quickly. They need to do some major damage control in light of -how shall I say this? – recent events.

Sione Pouha, Nick Mangold, Joe McKnight and Darrelle Revis  have all been named to Pro Football Focus’ All Pro Team .

Pouha had an excellent season but as the folks at PPF pointed out, his name is rarely mentioned as one of the best nose tackles in the league. According to PFF, Sione Pouha leads all NT with defensive stops on 11.3% of running plays.

Joe McKnight finished the season with 31.6 yards per return but he ended the season slow due to injuries.

Obviously Revis and Mangold are arguably the best in the league at their respective positions, so it comes as no surprise to see them recognized.

The Daily News has learned that intern Mike Smith, who was instrumental in reviving LB Aaron Maybin’s career, will be the full-time outside linebackers coach.
Lastly, a few Jets have had surgery or are scheduled to have surgery:
  • Eric Smithj (knee)
  • Mike DeVito (shoulder)
  • Matt Slauson (shoulder)
  • Marcus Dixon (shoulder)
One more random thought : It was announced late last night that Patriots Offensive Coordinator Bill O’Brien will be the new head coach at Penn State. This is significant for a number of reasons but it it’s possible it has an impact on the head coaching interviews being held in Jacksonville this week. Jets Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has an interview with the Jags scheduled for today. Perhaps eliminating O’Brien from contention will increase Schoottenheimer’s chances?

The Patriots have also requested to meet with Josh McDaniels. In case you wondering what they are planning on doing to replace O’Brien.
